Freitag: PMG Pride immernoch @ Flinders Reef / Friday: PMG Pride still @ Flinders Reef

Before the herd is up to go for another day of deep-sea science, the divers already prepare their gear to explore Main Cay Reef with an early morning dive searching for sponges, octocorals, brachiopods, crown-of-thorns starfish and other creepy crawlies of the shallows. A beautiful dive, lots of canyons and crevices to peep in always watched by a pod of bumbheaded parrotfish and two white tip reef sharks. At least the spongers collected some interesting stuff and one careless crown-of-thorns starfish had to give a few tube feet for scientific purposes. Before embarking on the Pride again, we already spotted thumbs-up of the ROV crew after an early-morning check of the whole system...promising with regard to the next flight down to some 800 mtrs.
Frank gives us another half an hour to enjoy breakfast, before starting the engines to go four a bumpy ride in a rather rough swell. We're heading West towards South-West Reef, where the ROV is going to explore the deep again. An interesting drop-off some 20-30 mtrs in about 530 mtrs depth caught our eyes on the parasound image – a decent job for the ROV. All getting excited, since the vehicle seems to behave, but all of a sudden the signal transmission from the ROV to the control room breaks down. We have made it to 60 mtrs depth – not exactly what we were looking for! Probably a water leakage of some sort, Nico reasons.
There is nothing but getting the vehicle back up again and have another deep dive into its eletronics. With the sun already descending to the horizon, the ROV will stay onboard until tomorrow morning and we are released from this day's duties to go for another gorgious dinner and a subsequent cinema visit in the mess of the Pride, showing "Slumdog Millionaire" tonight.
