Montag: Ablegetag / Monday: take-off day!

Während ich auf dem Achterdeck der PMG Pride sitze, der Wind in meinen Haaren spielt und das Mondlicht auf dem Wasser vor Magnetic Island tanzt, kann ich kaum glauben, dass die Expedition wirklich begonnen hat... So viele Jahre sind vergangen (vierzehn um genau zu sein) seitdem die ursprüngliche Idee geboren wurde, die Tiefsee-Fauna des Queensland Plateaus zu untersuchen. So viele Jahre der Planung, so viele Versuche Forschungsmittel aufzutreiben, so viele logistische Probleme zu lösen, so viele schlechte aber glücklicherweise auch gute Nachrichten... Und nun sind wir hier!
Obwohl es noch immer einige offene Fragen seit meinem letzten Blog-Eintrag gibt (die Hauptfrage ist noch immer: wie bekommen wir die Kameraausrüstung schnellstmöglich an Bord, nachdem es endlich durch den Zoll ist aber jetzt in Quarantäne festhängt? (ja, Kameraausrüstung in Quarantäne, fragt nicht...)), haben wir trotzdem pünktlich in Townsville abgelegt. Überaus dankbar für alles was Mark und sein Team in die letzten Tage für uns getan habe, verließen wie die Pier unter intensiver Kamera und Video Dokumentation.
Der erste (kurze) Abschnitt der Reise führte uns nach Magnetic Island, wo alle Taucher einen ersten Tauchgang zum Testen der neuen Mares-Ausrüstung durchführten. Der Tauchgang war nicht besonders aufregend, aber es war gut wieder ins Wasser zu kommen, und alle freuen sich auf die nächsten Tauchgänge im Korallenmeer.
Und jetzt heben wir fast den Anker, um zum Myrmidon Reef aufzubrechen, wo wir morgen früh den ersten Testtauchgang mit dem ROV durchführen werden. Wir halten die Daume gedrückt...
Und wie Merrick es gerade ausdrückte: „Hooray we’re at sea!“

Sitting on the aft deck of the PMG Pride, refreshing breeze in my hair and moonlight on the water off Magnetic Island, I can hardly believe the expedition has actually begun… So many years (fourteen to be precise) since the original idea of exploring the deep sea fauna off the Queensland Plateau came to a few inspired scientists’ minds, so many years of planning, looking for funding, figuring out the logistics, receiving lots of bad and fortunately also some good news… here we finally are!
Although there are still a few open questions since my last blog entry (the main one being: how will we get hold of the camera equipment that, after being stuck in customs, is now stuck in quarantine? (yes, camera equipment in quarantine, don’t ask…)), we departed Townsville today on schedule. With much photo and video coverage, we left the wharf, full of gratitude for Mark and his team from PMG who managed to get so many problems solved and fulfil all our wishes.
The first (short) leg of the trip took us to Magnetic Island, where all the divers jumped into the water for a first dive. Although the dive wasn’t exceptionally exciting, it enabled us to test our new snazzy Mares equipment. Everyone came out yearning for more and looking forward to the next dives in the Coral Sea.
And now we are about to steam off to Myrmidon reef, where we will be running a first test dive with the ROV tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed…
And as Merrick just pointed out in passing: “Hooray we’re at sea!”
